Faith Academy boys basketball give coach 100th victory

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team finished fifth at the Boerne Geneva holiday tournament Dec. 28-30 and captured head coach Zakk Revelle’s 100th career win.
The Flames beat Boerne Geneva 64-61 in the consolation game, Houston AWTY International School 72-62 in overtime, and Houston Lego Prep 70-55 and lost Austin Regents 61-55 and San Antonio Christian School 68-46
The Flames’ win against Lego Prep was Revelle’s 100th as their coach, who is in his seventh year of leading the program. Revelle credited many people for the accomplishment and began rattling off a list of names of players and staff members who helped his career reach the milestone. And he added that none of it would have happened without his wife, Kindsley.
“The No. 1 thing are the guys. You can’t do it alone,” he said. “You have to people who give you a chance. (Former Faith athletic director) Randy Denton is a big part of my coaching career and gave me a chance. (Faith Administrator) Amy Cosby gave me an opportunity to teach. (Faith running coach) Steve McCannon took a 25-year-old know-it-all young coach and said, ‘This is how you do it.'”
The Flames enjoyed the rematch with Geneva after losing in the season opener 56-48 Nov. 14.
Faith trailed by a point with 40 seconds remaining. Freshman guard Will Slyker, who was voted to the all-tournament team, hit a shot with 22 seconds and hit free throws for the win.
“We were really excited to win the game,” the coach said. “We were locked in. We felt like we could win the game.”
Faith began the tournament against San Antonio Christian School.
“That was our first game after the (Christmas) break,” Revelle said. “We felt good through the first quarter.”
Then the fatigue set in. Still that game forced the Flames to play their way back into game shape, which is why Revelle scheduled the tournament after the five-day break from the court.
Faith now turns its attention to the District 3-3A opener against Temple Holy Trinity Friday, Jan. 5, at The Fire Pit. The boys junior varsity plays at 5 p.m. with the girls varsity at 6 p.m. and the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m. Revelle believes his players are ready thanks to this tournament.
“That was really great,” he said.
